Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing has teamed up with Hunters4Hope, a hunting community initiative that processes recreationally harvested venison meat and distributes donations to over 40 food pantries. Hunters at Glen Dene can bring 50 pounds of venison per person back to the US with them, but there is plenty more meat on a red stag carcass than that! All meat that is not taken with the hunter, or, if the hunter chooses, the meat from their entire animal, is donated to Hunters4Hope. The organization projects to donate over 12,500 kgs of ground venison in 2025- that’s over 100,000 meal units! Visitors to pristine New Zealand will be surprised to learn that 15-20% of the country’s population faces food insecurities, affecting 27% of New Zealand children. Much of this manifests in skipped meals, uncertainty about where, when, and how food will be sourced, and, notably, in malnutrition. Venison offers not only a high protein and low fat fuel source, but it is also nutrient rich, packed with vitamins B6 and B12, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. In a nutshell, venison helps promote muscle growth, energy levels, and brain, heart, and immune health- a true miracle food, and a great thing to be able to share with New Zealanders in need on your trip!

Bringing meat home to the US is “easy as,” as the Kiwis say! If you’re interested in adding prime New Zealand Red Stag cuts to your table at home, our guides will butcher and prepare your animals to freeze in a cooler before your flight. Then you simply check the cooler as an extra bag. The US allows fifty pounds of meat per person to be brought from New Zealand. We have great success with the meat staying cold for up to 72 hours, with the center of the cooler even remaining frozen!

We strive to fill your fifty pounds with the best cuts available. Of course, back straps and tenderloins are the first priorities, but we also like to include the four main cuts from the hindquarters (the top round, silverside and eye of round, knuckle, and rump) and the flat irons from the shoulder if not damaged by the shot. If weight allows, we can add in some of the shank meat and trimmings to slow cook or grind. See some of our favorite recipes for each cut here (https://glendenehunting.com/what-to-do-with-…-venison-at-home/)!

Want to take only the best? Or are there more in your group to fly with an extra fifty pounds? Hunt a young meat animal during your stay at Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing. Without predators in New Zealand, controlling the population of females on the property is a must, and prime cuts from a young red hind or fallow doe will have your mouth watering!

Don’t stress if bringing home meat is not convenient on your travels. Many clients spend more time touring New Zealand or stopping at other destinations on their trip home, complicating the process of traveling with meat. Any meat remaining at Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing will be utilized.

In his words “she will be impressed” when talking about our new geo dome accommodation.

Glen Dene station is situated on the South Island of New Zealand between the shores of Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. Covering some 15,000 acres, it is a
working deer, sheep and cattle farm and is also home to a variety of wildlife, some of which include wild ram, red deer, fallow deer, chamois and also tahr on adjoining properties to which they have access. Trophy hunting begins around February and runs through to late October with packages to suit solo or group hunters,
families or corporate gatherings. They also offer some excellent trout fishing.

A multi-million-dollar eco-dome glamping retreat on the shores of Lake Hawea has taken out the title of best new build over $100,000 at an industry awards ceremony last weekend.

The Camp, a quintessential Kiwi camping ground located in park-like settings on the shores of Lake Hawea, won the title of Resco Best New Build over $100k Award at the Holiday Parks Association of New Zealand (HAPNZ) annual awards for the development of the Cross Hill Lodge & Domes.

The judges were impressed by the six energy-efficient geodesic domes which have been designed and built in a secluded area of The Camp, providing a premium level of glamping accommodation at the popular South Island glamping spot.

HAPNZ CEO Fergus Brown said the judges were “very impressed with the premium product”.

“The geodesic domes provide quality accommodation at a premium rate that will meet the needs of visitors and provide valuable income for the property. It is excellent to see holiday parks investing in new and improved product at a time when business is very difficult.

“The judges applaud Sarah and Richard for providing a premium product to meet customer demand as well as exceeding their expectations when they arrive,” he added.

In the works for over two years, and delayed due to covid-19, owners Sarah and Richard Burdon forged ahead with the $2M + build despite the pressures and uncertainty of covid-19.

Co-owner Sarah Burdon said the couple and the wider Camp team were “stoked” to take out the title.

“We’ve all worked so hard to get the domes completed, facing numerous barriers along the way. It is one of our long-term sustainability goals to provide accommodation all year round so to have the domes now finally open and experienced by guests for the winter is so rewarding. The feedback we’re getting is phenomenal and guests are loving the uniqueness of the concept and the High-Country Hospitality we’re providing”, said Sarah.

Located within the parklike surroundings of The Camp, Cross Hill Lodge and Domes celebrate the magic of human connection on the land with high country hospitality and premium comfort in a remote, peaceful setting.

Each of the six domes at Cross Hill has a 40sqm interior with a 30sqm deck and provide an enviable architectural aesthetic, bringing the outside in, to each and every dome.

The floor to ceiling window enables guests to lie beneath the stars at night, cocooned, safe and warm (or cool) from the outside elements and in the day the beauty of the natural environment surrounds the domes.

The domes are the latest accommodation offering at The Camp, which introduced Bell, Denver and Safari-style glamping tents to the campground in 2019, to complement its cottages, cabins and other camping options.

4 Reasons Couples Should Travel and Hunt in New Zealand

Offsetting hunting trips with a second non-hunting vacation each year to keep everyone happy? What if you could get the best of both worlds in one incredible trip of a lifetime? New Zealand is a number one travel destination and number one hunting destination, making it possible to provide a shared experience like no other!

World-class hunting

New Zealand is world renown for its hunting opportunities and trophy animals! At Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing we consistently produce top quality hunting experiences for trophy red stags, chamois, tahr, and fallow bucks! Better yet, Glen Dene offers combined couple hunting packages, designed to share a hunting experience on a number of trophy species with your loved one! Don’t let the exquisite mountain scenery fool you; this is no typical backcountry trip. With knowledgeable professional guides, lodge accommodation, excellent driving tracks, and opportunities for helicopter assistance each of these animals is possible for everyone! Along with this world-class hunting opportunity, Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing provides a well-rounded experience for couples.

Breathtaking scenery

The breathtaking sights and views of New Zealand are not a thing to miss! Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing offers magnificent scenery all the time, whether its on the mountainside for a hunt overlooking one of our gorgeous lakes, or while sipping a glass of wine in the wood fire hot tub after a successful day. Not only does our location between two of New Zealand’s most spectacular lakes, Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea, provide for stellar sights, but also we are only a short distance from many “must see” destinations, like the majestic Blue Pools and Fantail Falls of the Southern Alps and the remote West Coast beaches. Nothing can make you feel closer to your loved one than soaking in some of the most stunning views New Zealand has to offer, except maybe sharing some unforgettable experiences with them in this picturesque setting.

Something for everyone

Along with our combined hunting package for couples, Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing offers other activities for couples on their hunting trip. Spend a day exploring remote backcountry rivers with a fly rod in hand on one of our privately guided day fishing excursions. Or mount up on a bike tour of the Gibbston Valley wine region. In New Zealand, there’s something for everyone, and at Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing we cater packages to include the activities you desire! So whether you want a spa day, hiking, sightseeing, wine touring, shopping, or one of the many Queenstown adrenaline activities, we have you sorted! Being able to add these other opportunities, along with world-class hunting, from one location is very unique to Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing. While we love seeing couples share in other activities along with our hunting, we understand that sometimes people have a different idea of a day well spent. Our non-hunter program allows for guided touring and activities for one partner in town while their counterpart is out hunting. Afterwards, tales of the day’s adventures hunting and touring can be shared over a glass of wine and nibbles at the lodge.

High country hospitality

The high country hospitality of Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing includes warmth, family-like friendliness, and thoughtfulness from the simplest gestures to the grandest feasts, as you’ll soon find out! This atmosphere makes traveling to Glen Dene for a hunting trip ideal for couples. A hunt here is not a “boy’s trip,” nor is it “roughing it.” We set this cordial scene starting with breakfast, and always end everyday with a family style dinner with all our guests. Our team strives to make you feel all the comforts of home with the luxuries of a vacation. Richard and Sarah Burdon, the owners of Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing, enjoy sharing not only their high country station, but also some of their favorite local wines and foods each evening. Robin and Lindsay, Glen Dene’s chefs, bring exquisite New Zealand fare to table. And all of our guides share their wealth of knowledge throughout the day.
